Urgent: What sound when timing is out?

Anyone on just now who can tell me what the engine would sound like if the timing was out?

I got my engine up and running again, and it works ok, but it sounds very very ticky. Not sure if its cos its been in bits for a few weeks or not?

Timing seemed OK by hand?

My first thoughts, but hasnt gone away after a few minutes? Maybe I should warm it up a little more?

Oh, the back end is about 15inches off the floor, dont know if this would affect oil distribution in block?

you really need to put some pressure on the engine to get the oil into the tappets, can you take it for a quick drive doing a few accelerations?

tappet noise doesn't really go away that easily just by warming it up in my experiences.

but not too high revs of course!

Cheers. Betetr put the wheels back on first

Need to bleed cooalnt now anyway, so will do that, warm it up, final bleed, then quick spin, see if noise goes.

Cheers.

just worried in case I was doing damage

What woudl be main symtpoms of incorrect timing. Can you tell if its abit out, without driving it?

it can do, my TF is kept on a drive with a tilt and i do find in low temp nights I get a brief tappet noise on startup for few secs.

If you can't drive it then keep warming the engine by revving it from idle to 2-3K rpm but not too quickly.

I'm not up on timing TBH but unless you've been messing with the HT leads or ECU I can't imagine you affecting it.

Don't know why but I assumed Broon meant Valve timing not ignition.

has he taken the cambelt off then?

if it is valve timing then isn't there a really rough noise and backfiring?

Yes, had belt off etc. Seems to have settled down now, just got to 90 degrees. Guess it was tapets all along

20 mins and its still not at fan temp yet

NO rough noise or backfiring , so I guess valve timing is OK?

Thanks for the help.

I would say so, it would be obvious if the valve timing is out as it will sound rough.

No help from the weather as well I guess!!

Air in hydraulic tappets after a week or so laid up.

No problem - should clear after 15 mins at 2000rpm.
