FAO those with loud ticking

Symptoms
- loud ticking on startup
- speed with engine revs
- disappears after a few minutes

This can be tappets caused by oil after periods of standing, but mine would come back after 15 mins or so of engine being switched off.

I did an extensive search on google and it seemd as though a leaking exhaust manifold would make the ticking noise (dont ask me how).

I then realised I had replaced mine around the same time as the ticking started.

Anyway, I went out and found one of the bolts was only torqued to 40nM, instead of 45!!!!! A whole 5 nM!!

Tightened it up, and voila, engine is as quiet as a mouse!!

Wortha check folks

Just have to rmeove the manifold heatshield (one 13mm bolt and two 10mm screws), then you can access the manifold bolts.

Jobe done.

(I also discovered there seems to be a bolt missing!!!!, but this doesnt seem to affect the ticking. Will replace as soon as I can get one. MAybe this is elading to performance issue?)

Hey Broon - good job you didn't sell the car in desperation. More car problems are caused by poor maintenance than poor manufacture. But it's no wonder none of us suggested that as a cure - imagine your response if we said "it's all down to you".

NOW ENJOY THE CAR.

Inlet manifold fixings - in the past I have just used a cheap 1/4" drive socket set. I think the trick lies in getting the right length extension.

That could answer why my car was ticking. It started doing it quite a bit when first starting up, I put it down to the HG starting to fail and some water getting into the oil. Since I replaced the HG in June all has been fine - of course I had to remove the manifold to do the work so maybe that was the problem.

I better explain my theory!

I had the oil mixing with the coolant and some mayo in the dip stick for a few weeks but as there was such a slight water loss and no overheating, I used the car for a few weeks until I had the parts together and a free weekend to replace the gasket. As time went on the ticking started and I had the theory that as water was getting into the oil, it might have found its way to the tappets and caused the ticking

Maybe so or not, but after the oil change when the gasket was replaced, the ticking stopped.

OK, my ticking came back over time , big style, but then I had a missing bolt on my manifold.

Got new bolts yesterday and fitted today. Quiet as a mouse.

I an confirm that the loud ticking , in time with revs, dieing off after a minute or two, msotly on load, as opposed to idle, was caused by a leaking exhaust manifold.

I will post ups comparative sound files before and after from today, when I can be bothered shortenign them a bit

Pic below -Mmmm, shiny

Whislt looking at the pic though, what is the bracket for? And does it look like someone has been welding near my manifold?

IN the second pic, this was bolt no 3, under the bracket. It was unable to be tightened properly. It seems to be shorter than the rest, or rather the smooth bit in the middle seems larger?. It is also blackened, suggesting it has been leaking. New one is nice and tight (45 Nm). Wonder if this has been causing any perofrmance issues? (although it would surely affect emissions but mine was fine

isn't the bracket for the heat shield ??

that stud has deffo had exhaust gasses on it from a leaking gasket, which would be detrimental to your performance......and the cars
