loss of coolant leak check

didnt go to plan.... we opened her up, jacked her up and found no evidence to explain losing a inch a week of coolant... so will be replacing teh cap today as a matter of peace of mind..so i'll see what happens once thats been swapped.

Did you look at pump (i.e. remove cambelt covers) and also did you remove the bumper and look at whole radiator for leaks/damaged areas. I had a leak at the bottom of radiator, but the coolant just collected in part of the subframe and also the bumper so never made it outside to "tell me" it was leaking.

Do you ever get a sweet hot coolant smell?

had a look around the water pump and surrounding area.... there are a couple of marks on the driveway, which arent oil, but am assuming its coolant as it isnt freezing... so tended to keep checks to the rear... but had a quick look at underfloor pipes and radiator and tehy all look fine.

Probably just means it is leaking somehwere and getting burnt on the block or somehting. Maybe water pump leak, or small leak in a hose.?

I get the smell a lot when my car is acting up, especially after full throttle, but bizarrely, I am not losing coolant, well , not to any worrying level anyway

Had exactly that problem! About an inch a week. Had it completely pressure tested with no success, but found that the oil was getting very creamy. Turned out the head gasket had gone - no a very pleasant situation - quite expensive unless you want to do it yourself, including skimming.

I could smell the coolant when my hose developed a small cut last week - glad I was able to smell it as it gave a good early warning.

Just fixed it tonight - cannot get the smell of anti-freeze off my hands

checked my oil last weekend and it looked fine.. it had the HG changed for a LR one a couple of years ago.... new cap is on, i'll keep an eye on coolant levels for the next few days with fingers tightly crossed.

Get the bumper off and did you look RIGHT into the water pump?

my coolant is still dropping...

there is now a big massive wet mark on the driveway, around just inside the drivers side rear wheel... it doesnt evaporate nor does it freeze over... which i am can only assume is either oil or coolant... but when i leave, its pitch black and also the same when i get home, so am unable to get a good idea what it is.
it could also potentially be a red herring..i think come the new year, it will be booked in for a pressure test.

Headlights should be good enough (first thing in morning) to allow you to stick a finger in the wet patch for a sniff test. Oil & Antifreeze have quite distinctive smells.

Could be the start of a Blue Ice Incident ?

btw my sudden coolant drop hasn't been repeated yet.

Mine did exactly the same thing the other day, coolant dropped about half a CM or so, I topped it up and wrapped a paper towel around the cap to check and no leaks there and it's stayed up since

Could the fairly sudden drop in temperature recently have something to do with it?
