either you don't have the right code or you're not entering it correctly.

look at the little red light on the door when you open the door. if it stays on then the immobilizer is ON.

the directions on how to input the code stated in the manual are incomplete, do the following :

1. make sure all the windows, doors, bonnet and boot are shut tight.
2. lock your car with the key then remove the key, wait till the red light blinks at a slow rate.
3. insert the key and start inputing the code starting by the right direction.
4. remove the key and open the door. if the red light is on, shut the door and start all over again. if there's no red light then you disabled the immoblizer and can now start the car.

access code.

Hi, some early rovers were given wrong codes. Try adding a 1 to second and fourth digit. So 1,2,3,4 would become 1,3,3,5.
The " machine gun" noise is the cdl motor overheating.
Hope this helps, Cheers

Just to let everyone know, the above advice did work.
