Cannot Change gear.

Hi i have looked back a few pages but couldn't see any thing relevant.

I have a Zt 120 1.8i about 18k on the clock. last night I noticed that I couldn't select 1st or Reverse without switching the engine off. Once the engine was off I could select first, then once got going I could select 2nd and third but at a struggle.

Any ideas what could be causing this as when the Engine is off and the clutch is depressed it will select the required gear.

Don

As the clutch is alll hydraulics it sounds like a master or slave cylinder (or maybe both!).I s thr carpet footwell (under clutch pedal) wet?. If so probably yor master cylinder!

Look down next to your battery tray, towards the gearbox (its a small gap). You will see a coolant pipe, make sure this is fastened to the battery box. If not, it drops onto the gear selector and wont let you select gears. Tie the hose back up and the gears will be sorted.

Hi Dab06
Very low mileage for clutch problem, assume from your moniker car is 06 model
You should always be able to select any gear when engine is not running
Fact that you are having trouble with engine running indicates that clutch plate is not fully being freed off from flywheel when clutch depressed.

Question is why
Defect in hydraulics, clutch slave or master cylinder, question, does clutch pedal start to release clutch long before pedal is fully depressed as it should, if clutch only starts to operate halfway down or more, suspect system short of hydraulic fluid.

Defective clutch diaphram plate, fingers overheated & lost their tension due to driving with foot always resting on clutch pedal, so clutch overheats & friction plate rapidly wears out.

perhaps others can think of possible reasons for early clutch failure.

Gearchange linkage problem?

Hi kev and many thanks for your quick response, i don't have a problem putting it into gear, the gear stick moves fine but when it's in the drive position it just revs similar to how a manual would with a completely worn out clutch.

Sounds like a hydraulics problem to me. Have you checked/replaced the autobox fluid? Is it the specified grade?

Hi,
Loathe to come in early as years since had an auto.
Tcuts response is exactly what I thought
"Cooked" an auto box oil seals in heavy summer traffic due to overheating fluid years ago, g/box had to be stripped & rebuilt

Hose to the auto fluid cooler has been known to split thus dropping all the fluid.

With a bit of luck replace hose and fluid and you might be ok if you havent driven very far.

When refilling important to use the right fluid and have it at the correct temp.

Many thanks dave, i will have a look tomorrow now, you don't know how much i apreciate your feedback guys, the gearbox was working wonderfully so i don't think it's anything mechanical, i will post back tomorrow.

David, T-cut, just had a look underneath the car and you guys were spot on, the hose has come of at the flange into the cooler and dumped all my gearoil, the problem occured when i went from drive to neutral and i only traveled about 1/2 mile before that went so hopefully there is no gearbox damage.
