MGF Audio Install
the story goes...
i had been wodndering for a while what sort of audio install i could put in my F it started off as a set of coaxials and a small amp and for the time being that was fine. but this was soon put to shame by many other sound systems i had heard in cars. so the challenge was set so me and my ice guy (jason) decided to make the loudest mgf!! the first plan was a single 8" sub in the t-bar and a set of uprated components running of a 4ch amp. BUT... during this planning session the ice man had a brainwave (or a moment of stupidity) when he suggested to install 2 yes 2 10" slim line subs behind the seats. after much measuring and head scratching we decided it was possible. so without much more thought we did this... ![]() thats 25sq foot of sound deadening to replace the original inch think carpet that was there before. then we did this... ![]() thats about 5 litres of fibreglass resin and about 4sq metres of fibre glass matting this process took about a week... ![]() this now gave us the basis to start the build... once it was dry we cut it in half and spent about an hour removing it from the car. after that we had a break with a tea and some generic biscuits and using the t-bar as a table for the tea we thought it could do with livening up so... we decided to put some 3way components in on the grounds of they would look the muttz nutz... ![]() so what with 3ways in the t-bar 2 ways up front and 2 10" subs goin in we had a lot of work to do. a few more late nights and cups of tea later we achieved this... ![]() ![]() ![]() we then test fitted and had an initial listen and lets just say we were highly pleased with the outcome we then annoyed a few neighbours and parents for about an hour then took it all out again redy for the final fit! at this point we decided to attend the beach bunny run in brighton and set that as our target for completion. bare in mind we still had a lot of work to do and this was only 4 days away... we slightly underestimated the time scale and had to work from 6.30pm on the fridy untill 2.00am on the saturday to get it all finished and ready. and taadaa... finished product... ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() with no time for a test that night we had to wing and and leave it for show day with our fingers crossed... saturday morning and 3 hours of sleep later meant it was time to get up wash the car and refit anything that was still missing... we first heard the system in all its glory while on the way to meet moon man mike at the harlow BP the hard work was all made worth while by winning best car at the meet ![]() thanks for all who voted and showed interest... we still have not recovered the lost sleep!! |

Fantastic Matt (I nearly said awesome, but I think I'm using that word too much
)There's a lot of work gone into that. I still havent had a decent 'in car listen'. Sophie and I enjoyed listening from behind you on the way to the racecourse....did you see the lady singing along as she walked past at those traffic lights?

What did you use to cover the wood and fibreglass? How did you get it looking so neat?

Amazingly its just cheapo audio carpet, we made some covers out of 8mm (i think) MDF which covered all the gaps and imperfections, cut the sub holes out, then just loads of spray glue and carpet!

I like it, nice to see someone do an audio sound system in a small car. Been into it for along time since the days when I used to go to custom car shows in Yorkshire in the 80's.

Theres a few people who want to have a listen! Must get together again for another meet soon (basingstoke on the 10th perhaps)
The resin I obtained through work so it wasnt that expensive, and we fiddled with the amps today to gain some more (still running it in!), on saturday the rears were at 50% and the fronts at 45%. Headunit is still running completely flat eq aswell! |

I had Jacqueline du Pré at full volume and couldn't hear her for Michael Jackson, Spice Girls and Corner Shop banging out from this install. . . . and they were 3 cars behind. Big respect for these guys, I just wish I had the skill, patience and tenacity to do what they did in that lil car.
