Talking Your chance to meet myself & Dr Dave - oh, and have a taz around a track too! :)

Anyone interested in a track day? It'll probably be November 13th (Wednesday) down a track in Bornemouth. Yeah, a drag if you're up north I admit, but it'll be worth it

I'm getting more details on the track within a few days, but is about a 4 and a bit mile track, layout of which will probably change during the day. It'll include lunch and there is a limit of 50 people.

If you are interested, please drop you name down here and I'll post when I have more info. Price wise, it'll be £99 for the day.

We'll have 0-60 timed runs, speed traps (without the boys in blue), hopefully 1/4mile timed runs, the guys from RPM (Richardsons Performance Motorsport) will be there, from whom you can chat about performance mods you can do for your car. I'll be there, Dr Dave will also be there (he's still to confirm, but I'm sure he'll be there). Its a chance to get out, meet up and put a face to a name. Oh, and have a taz around a track too!

There are about 50 places currently, sounds alot, but the track is
so long you shouldn't get cramped together. Never been on a track day before? No probs, we all have a first time and you can drive at whatever speed you feel you want, you don't need to be a Jenson Button to enjoy a track day.

So, there you go, a social track day Any car makes are welcome, although peference will be given to MG and Rovers.

Track day insurance is recommended, see table below as a guide to cost.

Code:
Option | Sum Assured | Excess | Cover | Premium
   1 £ 2000 £250 £1750 £42.50
   2 £ 5000 £750 £4250 £80
   3 £ 8000 £1000 £7000 £117.50
   4 £11000 £1250 £9750 £155
   5 £14000 £1500 £12500 £192.50
   6 £17000 £2000 £15000 £230
   7 £22000 £2000 £20000 £305
------------------------------------------------
   9 £3000 £750 £2250 £42.50
  10 £7500 £2250 £5250 £80
  11 £12000 £3000 £9000 £117.50
  12 £16000 £3750 £12250 £155
  13 £20000 £4500 £15500 £192.50

The cover is for On Event Accidental Damage and covers:
the cost of parts
repairs to parts
fabrication
and specialist labour.

This cover does not include routine dismantling and reassembly, or engines and transmission.
Competition car insurance - Nik Kershaw on 01159 415255.

Insurance is only if something bad happens, I've personally been on 4 track days and, yes - accidents do happen, but its usually because someone thinks they are schmacher and they are actually Alex Yoong! Keep within your limits and you'll be fine! Track days are to have fun, not win races - which is what track days are not!

Sounds like great fun steve. It would be nice to meet up with everyone and compare notes. Would it be possible to get a picture of all the cars together on the site after. As you have a quarter mile set up it would be interesting to see the results posted. Look forward to it. I know the lil minx might be there8)

very intrested in the track

what level of marashalling / medical staff will be avalible.. ???

what is the surface like??? is it an airfield or a proper curcuit?

me thinks that track day insurance is a bargin at that price.. it only take a bit of lift off over steer, and an overcorrection to see you looking the wrong way down the track at 50+ mph, heading towards a nice tyre wall at speed after a 360 spin

resulting in broken headlamp, damaged bumper and a cone causing the sump gasket to fail.

a helmut saved my head from bashing the door pillar too

was my fault though....just 5mph more though that chicane... just 5mph too much

What format will the day run ?? open pit lane or grouped sessions?

grouped sessions may be good if there are a mix of abilities going.

last thing you want is to take something fast and get held up by beginners (me, etc) and lesser powered cars

Hi Snell

I'll ask about the medical situation - marshalling wise, its a proper track, so there will be marshalls around the track

Grouped sessions - I'll let you know once we've got an idea of numbers and experience. Given its a 4.5 mile track though, shouldn't be too much of a problem getting past! Rules regarding overtaking will be clearly explained before the session starts!

As far as I know, its an open pit lane.

I know what you mean about the saftey aspect, I was at anglesey in my old MGF and tried going an extra 10mph into a bend, because I thought it would take it! - It probably would have if I hadn't screwed my line up into the bend. End result, span at 80mph, ending up half on the striped kerb and half off! My main concern was rolling it, but thankfully the Fs are quite low and not very easy to roll, if the same had happened in a ZR or ZS I wouldn't like to think what would have happened. - well, besides the back wouldn't have slid out, it would have understeered instead.

Nearly held it though, that was the thing.. it was just like.. oooh, backs sliding, turned into it, still sliding... erm.. lift off very slightly... ****, still sliding, brake... bang! round it went! (not bang as in hit something, just span). Next time though, did 60mph through it, when I was going 70 and then tried for 80!

Just got a bit over confident, really. Still going mostly backwards at 60mph was an experience. Still don't know how the engine can cope with going 80mph forwards one second and then going backwards next... can't think it does it much good!

This does sound very interesting especially the quarter mile bit , and gives me something to aim towards to getting my car finished. Beware of the scruffy looking multicoloured metro

Yeah...I'll be there, perhaps in our VVC Metro with a tall geared 'box in it!

At the moment it has got a w*nked low ratio box for sprint and hillclimb use.....needs rebuilding

Still, the box did well (1) It wasn't ever fitted to the VVC motor in the first place (2) It has covered in excess of 100K since 1991 (3) It has endured two seasons-worth of the ASWMC HillClimb & Sprint Championship in Class D2, finishing in second place!

New turbo is superb thanks - running 14psi on it now.

Just waiting for the biggest chargecooler I've ever seen to arrive as my next mod.

Then its onto internals and head work, then get it all mapped on a Lumenition ECU and hope to be topping 350bhp.

Its undergoing a bit of bodywork at the moment though :S

Cool, did you ever get those custom anti-roll bars made? What's in the body shop for new kit or repairs?

Bloody hell, 350bhp from an old T Series turbo - that's serious impressive (and no doubt expensive stuff!)

Any idea what the torque would be at that bhp?

I got talked out of the anti-roll bars in the end, but I'll probably do them one day anyway I'm still convinced they would work.

Torque should probably be about 300lb-ft. So far torque steers never been a problem but no doubt will be something needing addressing.

I've got a traction control system from Omex waiting to be put on to try and get the power down - its already a bit hairy and I'm only on about 250bhp now.

There's more and more rover stuff coming out every day - which is obviously a good thing, plus the bore/stroke on the T16 is similar to the cosworth lump so you can also get ideas from the stuff the ford boys are doing.

Nope, I've never yet done a timed 1/4 mile - or been on a track in it for that matter!

Phil, if you can get your car weighed near to the track day, I've got an AP22 unit that should be able to give your bhp, 0-60 and qtr mile times (although they will be timed externally anyway). Would be interesting to see what g you pull when accelerating!

AP22 Info:

Got my Rover Torque mag today which told me about this, I'd more than likely be up for it. I've a recently aquired 220 Gti Turbo that I wouldn't mind giving a legal thrashing
