automatic gearbox problem rover 45

morning all
we inherited my father-in-laws Y plate Rover 45. It has done 49K miles.
A few weeks ago it ground to a halt although the revs were increasing & we took it to a local mechanic & he changed the gearbox oil, road tested it & declared the problem fixed. Got it home ok, then next day same problem again, this time gearbox light was on. Mechanic wanted car back for another look but I was unwilling to drive it any further & cause more damage! Ideally needs an automatic gearbox specialist to investigate further but question is - is it worth the potential expense?

My own thought is goto a proper xpart dealer, they will have the kit to talk to the box-other people don't really.

It could be many things but the box could be swapped out if you can get a decent second hand one BUT you really need the fault identifying.
