timing belt or timing belt kit ? Rover 420sdi

HI,

Got an old rover 420 sdi V reg 99. It's got 97,500 miles. Can't find when if at all i did timing belot change. Reckon might have done it at 36,000 miles.

Anyone know when it needs to be changed again?

Should i ask the garage to get the timing belt kit (i..e woith tensioners etc) or just replace the belt?

p.s what is the auxiliary belt - i saw that was changed a couple of years back at the rover dealer at the time on my service receipt?

Thanks,
Bob

Belt changes are due at 80 odd thousand miles so it may not have been done yet.

Aux belt is the belt that drives the aircon/alternator/PAS etc.

I would always change both belts and both tensioners if the history is unknown.

The whole kit will be around £150-175.

Try your local motor factors.

Garages
Just to clarify, there are 3 belts in total on the L series:

Cambelt
Fuel Pump
Accessory belt

The Cam and Fuel pump belts (+ tensioners) are what comes in the kit, you need to source the accessory belt separately.

Also worth doing at the same time are the fuel and air filters, unless these are known to be good.

Just wondering - Where did you get a garage to do this for 80 quid. Evereyone i call is charging a lot more. I got told 4 hours labour at £246 at &2.50 per hour, they did say the belt kit was £147. They also said it's poss the water pump may need changing meaning another 50 quid. cheapest quote i got so far is £375 on a garage that is just changing the 2 belts - they said they don't normally change tensioners - although i could ask to get this done as well. (i am based in london). Still ringing around for more quotes.

Er - I would give that garage a rather wide berth - they obviously don't
know the L-series engine from many other makes where the water pump is driven from the timing belt (eg, VAG) I reckon the water pumps last on the L-series for many thousands of miles - I changed mine at the time of my second timing belt change as I could see a very tiny drip from under the pump area. The pump was obtained at the same time as the belt kit, very reasonable, from AtoZ parts - total about £145 delivered. Now comes the best bit - there was no sign of leakage from the pump but the large cover plate o-ring was badly fitted at engines branch and coolant over all those miles had been seeping past it. The pump looked perfect. Also - they are driven via a tongue/slot arrangement from the PAS pump!
HTH
Pete
PS - anyone with mech know-how will find the belts a doddle to change (a bit tight for room on the 25s apparently) Only problem I had with mine was the stub for the idler coming away from the block, but handy as if it stays in place the idler is a ***** to get past the end without levering the engine over.
