Give your local parts department at Fords a call.... I seem to remember them using it and being able to get it / stock it - hope it helps

Don't use Ford's stuff, it's a different spec. Don't use anything any other garage suggest because they don't usually have any experience of CVT gearboxes. Definitely, don't use standard auto box fluid!!!!
You are right to demand Esso EZL799. It's now branded Mobil and is available a BMW MINI dealer because the early 'new' MINI automatics have the same gearbox. I bought 20 litres becuase I intend to keep my car a few years but am told if you take a suitable can to the MINI parts counter they will sell it by the litre. Worth a phonecall first. It's expensive from BMW though! (Usual BMW gold plated parts prices I'm afraid!) On your specific fault, after the gearbox has a fault it goes into 'limp' mode and needs a process called 'adaption' performed for the gearbox to relearn what it is supposed to do. Sorry haven't a link for it but a bit of googling should find it.

Hi Guys,
I have a 54 ZS 120+ with a CVT box (recon) and I sourced my gearbox oil from BMW Mini in Kentish Town, NW London after many failed attempts and a few blank faces from various mechanics, £17 for a litre and half and Mini grumbled about giving me a decent plastic bottle to take it home in! Here is their number, 0207 485 6011, try giving them a call and they may be able to give you the number for a Mini parts shop nearer to where you live. My girl just had her service and low and behold my reverse switch has been leaking and they topped my box up with a litre of black blooming oil !!! My hubby and I felt sick when we heard the manager say that and when we explained it all he tried saying his mechanic used the right stuff brought it all up on the garage computer and my hubby clearly pointed out that the screen said manual and mine is a AUTO!!!!! So now I have instructed them to drain the lot and replace with the proper stuff, they tried saying unipart CVT fluid would be ok becuase that is what the garage PC says but I was having none of it and gave them all the codes and said when it arrives to call me and hubby will go to the garage and check if its the right gear because I have a recon box not even a year old and I dont want to invalidate the warranty. Good luck Driftingin!! Last edited by Blondieelj; 18-07-2011 at 19:51. Reason: Spelling |

Just to clear up a misunderstanding, Unipart CVT is the same as BMW MINI.
I have been using same on 2 cvt boxes for over 4 years now.

Well spotted, electrical fault on ratio control
Fluid not at fault, yet ;-) When we first got the F box failed as a result of the garage thinking any ATF would do!! It was rebuilt and ever since has run on Unipart (on its 3rd change now) and sweet as a nut. As a precaution this time on the TF I will be relacing filter and fluid pan seal as well. Having only covered 25k in 9 yrs.

Good to hear you solved the fault. Was it just connections or a faulty part?
Also good to know that with correct maintenance these CVT gearboxes run well. Mine has only 17k on it in 7 years and I'm keen that it gives as long a life as the car!

Thanks fro reply, I think it was the connection at fault (corrosion), fingers crossed. But as above fluid and filter change is in order as well. Cant fault the CVT otherwise, I love it.
