Oil in the coolant but no water in engine oil!

The car seems to be running fine but I'm assuming that it wont last long. I changed the back box this week as the short pipe b4 it had a number of holes in it and I go do a few checks this weekend and find my water reservoirs has oil mixed in with it! I thinking oh ***** head gasket but I check the dip stick and top up point and its still black oil in there! Could it be that I overfilled the oil a while back?

I completely drained the cooling system and refilled her, took her for a blast and the oils back in the top reservoir! While draining the system I took off a few pipes and noticed that there was a little oil also in the pipe that leads to the turbo cooler!

I just don't know what it is, any suggestions!

If you have oil in the coolant it won't be because you overfilled the oil before, it could be the head gasket as you say.

oil getting into the water.... could be head gasket failure.

or oil cooler failure?

I thought the diesel was limited in upper RPM power because the fuel burns much slower than gas. Is this true?

Yeah, there's really no point to rev over 7000.

Indeed but which is more likely?
Then again, I haven't heard of a great number of L series suffer from head gasket failure in their standard form.

I don't know. I just wanted to stir the bowl.

I'd hate to say 'HGF' when there's an equally corrodable alternative explanation. Of course, the HG could be shot but from what we see on here people's coolant tanks tend to a-splode.

It is a LOT more likely to be oil cooler failure, as HGF almost always leaks combustion gases into the coolant.

Oil cooler failure is rare though, but not unheard of.
