Spiller's Wharf in The Evening Chronicle... Again!

Taken from last night's Evening Chronicle

PUTTING BRAKES ON THE MENACE OF BOY RACERS
Fence plan to stop noise and danger of custom car displays

By PETER YOUNG, Political Editor
peter.young@ncjmedia.co.uk

A stretch of city waterfront which has been turned into a racetrack by young people in fast cars is being fenced off.
The boy racers are congregating at Spiller's Wharf, close to Newcastle Quayside, at weekends to show off customised cars.
But they are also causing a nuisance and police checks have discovered vehicles wich are not roadworthy and drivers without licences, tax, insurance or MoT certificates.
Council leaders have now given the go-ahead for work costing £340,000 on the Wharf, which will be used as a berth for vessel during the Tall Ships Race next summer.
Work includes £30,000 to complete a two-metre high metal fence to keep out the cars although people will still be able to walk on to the Quayside.
The car enthusiasts, along with hordes of followers, gather on a large tarmac area next to Spiller's Mill to perform stunts and race.
Fences erected in the past have been destroyed and the council has dumped rubble but this has failed to deter the drivers.
Coun Stephen Psallidas who represents teh area, said: "Despite everything that has been doen so far, they continue to congregate there.
"They rev their engines and race along the main quay road by the Quayside. Hopefully fencing off the quay will make the area a lot less attreactive to them."
Council officials say that as well as tackling the problems with boy racers, they need to explore what work is needed on the quay before the Tall Ships Race comes to the Tyne in July.
The area is also earmarked as a key development site, estimated to be worth £6m when the builders move in.
Coun Psallidas says he also wants traffic calming measures on the quayside road when the area is redeveloped.

Dunno if it was just a quiet news day, but they seem to be ressurecting the anti-car modifiers campaign...

PS Proof to the idiots that spoil cruises, its YOU that gets venues closed down. I notice no-one complained about the cars that just park up.

this makes me soooooooo mad

i used to go there every weekend and in no way was it a race track or a drag strip or anything, the only speeding that was done was when the prics in the nova's and saxo's think there big and fast and used to wheel spin out of there and shoot off down the industrial estate

and how on earth could that cruise have been a neusence , it was on the sea front about a mile from the queside and about 1/2 a mile from any sort of civilisation, it's in the middle of a old industrial estate ffs, all they have done is closed that one and pused everone together in the arniston centre there is no way they will stop cruises, all they will do is move them arround or maybe even push them out onto the roads

Nah, never got into the arnie thing, too many cars in too small a place, too many p***ks from the Newcastle scene that I don't like, and the fact it is a ***** to get to from where I live. Either Newcastle, then Gateshead, then down the A1, or a quid each way just to use the tunnel... Was a regular at Spillers in the good old days though, and been to a few MetroCentre/Ikea events, and far too many TV nights to remember!

They don't happen so much nowadays, they used to be in the good old days of Team Valley cruising. When the tits turned up, the proper cruisers just left. Had BBC teams filming down there for documentaries and everything.

police and cruises don't mix. Had far too many producers to know that one. And the night they ordered every one out of Spillers and then did a full roadside check on everybody was funny. Ordered out at 11pm, last person left sometime after 3am in the morning!

Proof of my old days of cruising. One from Team Valley with Adrian (Roverdrive) and his brother Chris, summer of '02 I think.
