Question Which Rover 75 engine is best 131 or 320

Our 1.8 rover classic SE blew a head gasket so we are looking to buy a rover 75 connoissiuer CDTi instead hopefully to last at least 5 years. I can see some with a 131 engine and some with 320 engine and want to know which is best. I read some where too that earlier cars before 2002 are better ( reliable) can anyone help as we are not sure wether to buy an early or late cars if the milage is roughly the safe. We love our current car but don't want to throw money at a version that may need many head gaskets and his high on fuel. Really stuck so any pointers would be great as we are pretty scint and have a budget of 2 thousand only to work with and want whatever we get to last us through five more years safely

There is a 115, or 131 - basically just a map, same internals.

Hello and

The diesel engine used in the 75 and ZT is a BMW lump usually found in the BMW 320 but is common rail in the 75 and ZT. It came with 2 power outputs, 114 and 131 often referred to as 116 and 135. Rest assured there is no other difference in the engine apart from this. The 131 would be my choice as the extra power comes in handy for overtaking etc but both cars can be remapped to a similar power output or improved with a rover ron tuning box. More info here

There are a few issues surrounding the BMW engine some of which are rather expensive to sort out. Fuel pumps tend to be a problem as do maf sensors, clutch hydraulic system, injectors to name but a few. More info on all of these can be found using the search function

Cars earlier than 2002 would be better finished but that doesn't mean the newer ones are poorly built. The 75 and ZT are very well built, just the fit and finish and standard specification changed slightly after Project Drive. A full list of the changes exists on this forum should you be interested to know what was removed etc.

You might be hard pushed to find a good condition low milage CDTi that will last 5 years for 2,000 . As pointed out above they suffer from various problems so be careful buying an older model.

Personally replace the HG for the new chinese gasket (not the freelander one) and I doubt it will ever go again and use the money to fill her up, this way you wont be skint . You did say that you loved your current car, and you know the history.

If you live anywhere near Southend, British Legends will sort you out.

Just pay the 500 to get the head gasket sorted and if it's done properly it will last. Better the devil you know...

Yep totally agree and for you sub 500 notes you will get the a new cambelt and waterpump . K's are so simple to work on .

Hi we live in Hull East Yorkshire. we had a local garage fix it last time and he said there was no guarantee that it would work and it didnt. As it was oil leaking into the water and not the other way round I put in some wyns radiator sealant and it fixed it. but now it has gone alltogether with water in the oil as well and the oil light staying on. If someone who works on rovers in the hull area who knows what they are doing and can give some sort of guarantee we are willing to have it done.

A low mileage CDT especially the tourers are becoming very rare, they are in high demand. Replace head gasket by someone who knows what they are doing, the CDT engine is long lived and good to drive, just like every other car it needs servicing, and looking after.
