Radiator Man v Auto
Guys, what is the difference between the Rad on a Manual v Automatic ?
I've replaced the Rad on this 1998 620Sli Auto a few years ago with a nearly new unit from a car in the scrapyard, it was a straight swop. I've just ordered and collected a brand new boxed unit and have heard from the guy who is stopping them over that "it is the wrong one". I'm 200 miles away and getting a bit confused as to what the diff is, anyone any experience |

I'm not 100% sure, but I think the difference is as follows. The Auto rad has a pipe going thro the bottom end of it which allows transmission fluid to pass thro and be cooled. The rad for the manual does not have that. So the rad intended for an auto will fit either car (you just don't use that oil connection when fitted to a manual) but you cannot get away with a rad intended for a manual going in to an auto.

Thanks.
It was a few years ago I changed the Rad in this car, I can remember the job but not the detail. I know the 416 SLi Auto has a separate Auto Trans cooler but I can't remember the detail on the 620SLi. |

Thanks guys, some excellent info there.
I can clearly see the Auto Trans inlet and outlet. I think we have concluded that we have been supplied a Rad for a manual ![]() I must have just taken the Auto Trans connections in my stride when I did the job a few years ago cos I still can't recall dealing with them. |
