Netgear DG834G Modem/Router

HI all

Just wondered if anyone has experience of this -I'm thinking of getting one to share my BB connection with the other PC - and using a USB Wireless adaptor - any hints or tips? Or anyone suggest anything better - I can get these as a pack for £100 inc.

Thanks

Richard

Go for it - brilliant bit of kit. Dead easy to set up but flexible with it. I've been runnning the old (non-modem) version for about 6 months with no probs. You can sit in bed with your wireless PDA and check your emails.....

Decent kit.

Look at the USR Turbo kit though as their bundles are under £100 at 125Mb.

I use a Netgear DG834 (non wireless) which works really well. Loads of options for firewall rules etc and has some nice little features like remote router access and it can be setup to mail you if it detects any problems/attacks.

Need a big inbox for that option though.

Not really it is really tuneable so it ignores the normal traffic and only lets you know when something unusual is going on.

It was a joke Oliver.

I have seen the logging on a router that isn't filtered on what it sends. Hundreds of mails a day.

Only issue I found with the netgear firewall is that it does not stop internally generated traffic going out even when not on cofigured ports. Took a while to spot this and had it confirmed by the netgear support guys. So it isn't the best of firewalls unfortunately.

Sorry missed that one

The Netgear one seemed to work a load better than the USR and Zoom ones i have had. Also i found that the Netgear one has by far the best support pages with good firmware upgrades etc

Admitedly the USR was useless with the original firmware as it kept dropping connections (although this has been fixed for well over a year now). Since then though it has become the most complete solution in it's price range by a mile. You are looking at Cisco kit to better it now.

I have to say I have only ever used the Netgear router/modem wired so can’t really comment on the wireless performance, just the quality.

Another company worth considering. Do they support WPA yet though, or 100Mb+?

Along with Buffalo who are also worth looking at.

Not sure on the WPA (Could check mine right now but can't be ar$ed!) but with Speedbooster Technology I think they are at the 108Mb level.

Happy with 54G to be honest.

I currently use a Netgear DG814 (predecessor to the 834) for my Broadband connection, and will say that with out a doubt, a brilliant peice of kit. But since I have some nice 3com gear, a S3-4400 switch and 801.a/b/g AP, I would highly recommend them too.

Linksys, not too bad, but not the best ive used.

Definately not recommended are the Thomson speedtouch range. (I have a 530 ready to a sledgehammer at this very moment).

Cheers Baz.

Last time I looked it was still awaiting the firmware update for it.
