Question Anyone ditched their spare for weight?

Just wondered if anyones tried swapping the spare wheel and bag, for a can of tyre weld instead to save weight?

Seemed effective in my old car, does it effect the handling greatly? I have a trophy splitter on the front, but I suppose the weight helps it be effective..

Hmm.. anyone tried it?

I do this all the time Fran, when ever I take my car on track (track day or sprint event). Not ever actually compared times before and after, but by ditching a substantial amount of weight, it stands to reason that times will improve thanks to better accceleration and braking.

As for handling, never had a problem after removing the spare wheel - so I'd have to say no problem for you either

Cool thanks Rob, can I ask do you run without the spare all the time even when not on the track? Or is to much of a risk if you popped a tyre? I hear 'tyreweld' is very good?

Thanks

have wondered myself if the weight of tyre in front would affect handling as F must be quite light in front even with wheel in, i have 16" spare and is even heavier than space saver ,have had 2 punctures in the last year and wouldn't like to go without spare though, Dave

I may have to run without a spare if I undertake the cooling mods I have in mind - but otherwise, no, I always run the car on the road with a spare. Like Dave, I wouldn't risk it: the one puncture I've had would not be repaired by an instant mobility spray, and I'd have been nobbled

Isn't the crash protection/crumple zones designed to have a spare in place?

I know a guy with a TF, no spare and tyre weld. He recently got the first flat he'd ever had and the tyre weld was useless coz the hole in the tyre was about 1" across. After borrowing my spare to get him mobile again he promptly got new tyres, a spare wheel and threw the tyre weld away!

I wouldn't risk it Fran.

That's true Phil - the crumple zone had to be designed so that when the front end of the car crushes, it can do so while absorbing the energy in spite of this hard, non-deformable object in place. Removing the spare isn't a problem: if it were, MGR would have a problem selling TFs with a can of 'tyre weld' in the spare wheel's place...
