Cambelt tensioner.

On my 214 SEi Wedge; the tensioner set at halfway on the back plate, makes the (Dayco) timing belt too slack, to a point where I can push the cambelt between the timing wheels on to the support post for the timing cover. I've pushed the tensioner to max tension. I am now concerned it might be too tight.

What's the potential for over-tightening the tensioner?

Cheers

possible outcomes are :-

1) overheating the tensioner's bearing
2) shorten the life of the belt
3) extra stress on cam pulleys

Why did you suddenly decide to tighten the tensioner?

I definately wouldn't 'push' it to max tension - usually somewhere between 50 & 75% is about right.

I think you should replace the tensioner spring.

I removed the head and replaced the usual components when that occurs (i.e. the tensioner - car's done 100,000 miles).
