I attempted to replace the oil cooler pipes on my 45td yesterday. I say attempted because there was no way I could remove the old ones. They seemed incredibly tight and the open ended spanner that is required to fit the pipe nuts just wouldn't grip them when tapped with a hammer. It seems to me that what is required is something like a larger version of a brake-pipe spanner - is such a tool available?

Be extremely careful you don't break the oil pump casting it does not look to be very strong. I used an oxy-acetylene torch to heat the steel union nut red hot to free off mine. You may get away with a blow torch, but Oxy-Acetylene allows very intense heat to be applied locally to the steel without overheating the aluminium.

I then cut the pipe so I could place a socket onto the hexagon of the union nut.
