Hi Team.
Car was in for pre-MOT look around.
Needs both rear upper ball joints changed. There's a nice How-to on here (many thanks, Dert) and it tells me I'm going to need a 'deep' 46mm socket. I'd like to order one ASAP so I could do this at the weekend if Rimmers come through.
For anyone who's done this just how deep is deep?? Pictures in Dert's thread make it look like I need one honking big socket.
Thanks all.

It has to be deep enough to clear the tapered shaft on the ball joint. If you have the ball joint you can measure the distance from the bottom of the hex to the top of the shaft.

You will note that the ball joint has a very thin 'nut' portion. Most, or probably all sockets have a tapered edge to make it easier to get the socket onto the bolt or nut. I ground off that tapered edge, making the end of the socket flat, so that more of the socket was in contact with the ball joint's nut.

My deep socket came from Halfords.
